This is a very strong definition with lots of qualifiers. You might want to split this up a bit, because this is a pretty complex definition. I really like your qualifiers, and they are concise. I would clarify the word community because this could vary between different cultures, but otherwise this is a great definition!
With this definition, there is a lot you can potentially talk about in your essay, great choice! Instead of 'certain religions' you can state the main one that the majority of people believe in.

I would disagree with your simple definition buuuut that's a good thing! I think you do have a lot of proving to do through out your paper, though. Islam is considered an actual religion to a lot of people, not a political force (even though it definitely is being played out as just that. I think you could do a lot with jus that aspect. Good qualifiers too, nice job
A controversial topic that should be interesting! I like how you will be portraying the positivity of it, rather than the stereotypical American view of Islam that does not shed light on the positivity of the religion in itself.
Sounds like your essay is going to be very detailed orientated, you should use law books for one of your sources.
