Our Right
Is freedom a word that can be defined? One can question if this word can be correctly defined and it seems that the answer is yes. Defining this word would be a difficult and uneasy task, but conceivably less difficult than people might realize if not overlooked. Some people believe freedom is our democracy. Others would believe that it is an prospect to act freely and personify ideas. Having freedom is having the power to choose. This statement could not be more truthful, simply freedom is having the power to choose, by the way one wants to be governed, how one would like to pick to use our words in everyday life, and the way one decides to carry oneself everyday.
Freedom can bare a number of opinions, but overall the main concept that people want from the word is happiness. People have freedom and in order to be to free people see the need of happiness to be present. Together they play hand in hand with each other and can achieve the same goal. “ Shrouded in the desire for achievement and quest for material possessions (which by the way are legitimate) is the need for the expression of freedom and the experiencing of true happiness ” ( Kabamba, pg 1). The statement of desire to happiness and freedom is the main concept and many work for this, because it is a requirement of an human being. Freedom can bring about many questions to one on the way governments govern their countries, and this prevents them from their right to choose.
By maintaining ways of how groups of people choose to be governed, is the authoritative freedom to have the right to choose. The reasons behind the way groups of people choose to be governed is that, the crowd likes to be able to do completing what ever they want at any time. A perfect example of this would be communism, and how everyone is paid the same amount of money and work incentives. They are limited to their freedoms and therefore no one works to their full potential, because everyone is receiving the same profits. “ If there are no goals to achieve, and nothing to work toward except a production quota, where is the incentive to excel ” (Kaminsky, pg 1). The ability to choose how one feels to be governed and how it should work is the right way of freedom, because it is one’s choice to ultimately decide how it should be made in their society. The government has plenty of rules of how and what ways we should follow in their country if we want to be a member. One would argue that in a country’s government people should be able to choose what rules they believe to follow, therefore they could name their selves free and have freedom. If anyone is free and have freedom they are capable of choosing their regulations of government and how they prefer the rules to be presented and regulated. If one lives in a democracy, which all the people have a equal say, they would have part in decisions that are created in their lives. Therefore one has the right to choose and correspond with each other on their government, as well as the right to say and express what one desires.
The freedom to choose to speak freely without suppression and any act of looking, receiving, and communicating information or ideas are an expression all along with freedom. Conversations are held everyday and people have the right to talk about what they choose to. Along the lines of that, the freedom to choose what one feels the need to is of the essence of having freedom. An example of freedom and having the right to choose what one wishes was an occurrence in June 2011, “Robert Sayegh of Brooklyn was kicked off an Atlantic Southwest Airlines flight after a 45-minute delay when he complained to another passenger, “ What’s taking so fucking long? ” The flight attendant claimed he was being disruptive, but Sayegh defended himself by saying that in Brooklyn “ We curse as adjectives.” Robert’s rights were violated, because he has the right to choose what he feels because every person has their own freedom. To speak with no cost, concerning on one’s own interest is their right to choose what they determine to talk about in public or any situation. As well as the privilege to present oneself in any manner they desire.
To have the justification of how one wants to portray oneself, in their daily lives is their choice and model of having the freedom to choose. People make their own choices everyday and have the freedom to do so. Natives choose what clothes they want to wear, what religion they want to practice, and all other sorts of subject matter they crave. Freedom is their choices and people construct their choices every chance they get. The freedom of choice is the art of one keeping one’s options open for their own sake, of what they long for. “ Freedom of choice signifies a relationship between one actor and a series of alternative potential actions” (Oppenheim, pg 1). This is an illustration of how one’s choices is their right to freedom, and that they have multiple options to choose from. To have a broad selection to pick what they wish for and fulfill their need. It plays along the lines of Hume, a philosopher, historian, economist, and often grouped with John Locke, George Berkeley, and others in defining liberty as “ The power of acting or not acting, according to the determination of the will” (Hume, pg 1). He justifies how people have choices, but it is whether they are going to take action in obtaining their choice and having the determination in doing so. Others would argue against this and declare that peoples choices are limited, and that they can not make their choices from their own personal wants, because their needs are more important to fulfill. In refute many would disagree that freedom is the authority to choose.
The wide-range of choices and possessing freedom is an area many people have to argue against. Many would argue that freedom is more than to make choices. Freedom can go more in to depth of human rights and the Constitution. Having the right to choose is a portion, but obeying the law to achieve economic prosperity is of greater concern. “ It has therefore been applied to whatever actions, policies, or institutions may be deemed valuable, from obeying the law to attaining economic affluence” (Oppenheim, pg 1). From this juncture, he makes the point that freedom takes part in our society and that it is a word that can have meaning in many ways. People would argue that the idea of freedom passes on to the idea of social freedom. The word freedom in a sense is used to acclaim to a certain extent. Therefore it has different beliefs to people to carry out about within different moral principles. The word freedom has many to argue with the definition of freedom is to choose.
Freedom can simply be defined, and in fact to choose is the best definition for it. Freedom is an astonishing utterance that takes part in everyday society of humans, though it is simply an prospect to act freely and exemplify ideas. People are all free and have the power to choose. In consequence, if people are free then they have the power to pick their own aspirations. They have the authority to say what they feel and how they want to represent themselves, because they are their own person and have their own choices. People make their own choices everyday in what they want to wear, what they want to eat, and all other types of situations, because no one is there telling them that they cannot do and what they have to do. They have their own personal rights and control over their choices. It is simple and people have been practicing doing what they want for some time making their choices, and that freedom is precisely the power to choose.

  1. You choose a good definition and by having a good structure to your argument it also strengthened the paper because it was like following a road map. What you said in you thesis statement was exactly how it all flowed together paragraph by paragraph and you also had good exampled like communism. I didn't know that they all got paid the same but wouldn't that also goes under the law that everyone is treated equally? I thought communism also had a chance for the workers to show their full potential which results in raises and a higher job position.

  2. I really like the photos that you chose (although they are not in this paper) they really helped me understand what your paper was about before I even read it. I enjoyed reading your paper! Although the introduction was a little choppy, you recovered and the rest of your paper was written wonderfully. Very interesting topic to write about! It could have been more arguable, but I liked that you kept it simple.Good Job!

  3. This is a good paper, and is easy to read. I thought you explained each of your qualifiers well, and effectively proved your definition. This was a very in-depth topic, and you did a great job of proving why your definition is correct. I thought your pictures also proved your definition well.

  4. I like your definition of freedom and that you focus it on individual freedom versus national freedom. You explained your definition and supported it very well. I found the example about the man who got kicked off the plane very interesting. Good job on finding a creative source. You had a very strong conclusion. Well written!
