When was the last time you saw a ball roll uphill? You’re probably thinking, “As if that would ever happen on Earth because we have gravity.” Or better yet, you might assume that the ball was pushed up the ramp so it appeared to roll uphill. Let me tell you that I have witnessed this intriguing phenomenon of a ball rolling uphill while in the Black Hills of South Dakota, on vacation. We all know that it is a proven fact that water runs downhill, and objects eventually fall to the ground, due to gravity. It is also known that trees grow straight up out of the ground (as long as there are no obstructions that would cause the tree to grow around the object). This is not the case at the Cosmos House of Mystery deep in South Dakota’s Black Hills. At this tourist attraction, if you place a ball at the bottom of a sloped board, the ball rolls uphill instead of downhill. If you pour water on the bottom of an angled piece of sheet metal, it flows upward. The trees grow at an angle from the ground, all pointing away from this one spot in the middle of the Black Hills. They do not grow up straight out of the ground, but instead are all curved, even the tallest trees. This location with these strange happenings is not a hoax, though. The ball is not a “trick” tennis ball, and the water is plain tap water. At this location, an ordinary wooden chair is able to balance on just one chair leg without the support of any other objects. A person can even sit in the chair and it is still able to balance on just one leg, and does not waver at all. One can feel the effects of flying by stepping on two blocks of wood, leaning forward, and not falling flat on his/her face.
This specific site has puzzled tourist and experts alike, who have been visiting it since the early 1950s. Many experts have been trying to determine what causes this strange spectacle. Some suggest that it is due to a slight shift in the poles of the Earth, thus causing the magnetic field to be altered in some way. This could then account for the strange “anti-gravity” that appears to exist here at this site. This potential shift in the poles could be due to increased planetary movement. Others speculate that this could have existed since the creation of the Earth, and that it was not discovered until the 1950s. There is not one definite, logical answer to vindicate this, which is one of the foremost reasons why so many people come to this location to witness this natural anomaly for themselves. Others who are more skeptical of the scientific approach turn to special effects, saying that this is just something that could have been created by any of the special effects crews from Hollywood. Even more people think that this is just a fun tourist attraction, and they do not think twice about this marvel. They instead travel here to have an enjoyable time, and just accept the Cosmos House of Mystery as is.
The most logical explanation for this fascinating incident is that of the shifting of the Earth’s poles, creating an imbalance in the magnetic field. This is the only clear reason why the trees would grow at an angle, and why only partial gravity exists. Another strange detail is that gravity is not entirely non-existent here. For example, if a ball is thrown into the air, it still returns to Earth as would any object. It is solely when the ball is placed on the board that it rolls uphill. This is why experts have been perplexed by this irregularity in the laws of physics. Whether or not science is to blame, seeing definitely is believing, and this phenomenon does indeed exist.
I thought your first paragraph was really funny because it was like common sense stuff such as no duh if you throw a ball up it will go down due to gravity. I have never heard of that place before, but I do want to visit it now and your right lots of people will just go there to witness it for themselves and think oh my god this is so cool, but not many will even think it's supernatural or maybe a ghost is causing all of this. You have a lot of strong points and good argumentive points in your story.
ReplyDeleteChelsea,
ReplyDeleteI have been to the Cosmos House of Mystery and I was fascinated by the weird things that happen at that particular location. I remember that place, and I would compare it to a Ripley's Odditorium. Overall, the piece was woven with creativity and excellent facts about the place from what I remember.
I really liked the beginning of your story because it connected the reader to the story. Your story was not scary, but simply perplexing. I have never heard of this place before and I was really interested to read about it! I liked the fact that you creatively explained this place in a way that I could picture it. You also tie the whole story together by adding in the fact about its location from the poles, and why that could possibly be the cause of all these weird things happening. Great story!
ReplyDeleteI really like your story, Chelsea! I've always believed that there are a lot of "weird" things that happen on our planet everyday but I've never expected to hear a story about a ball rolling uphill or water flowing upward which are all about "anti-gravity". The title of your story was already attracted to me when I was browsing around other stories. Those facts, which are experts (or scientists) had been examined the place, the shifting of the Earth’s poles, creating an imbalance in the magnetic field..., give me an ethical appeal on you, that you are credible and trustworthy.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe this is an actual place. I can believe it, but at the same time I don't really want to. This was a great story for it kept me thinking and you gave so many "what if" options, that it kept the reader intrigued. As well as you proved that not everything on this planet is exactly what we think it is. Most convincing story by far. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThis makes me want to visit and see it for myself! How strange! I have actually never heard of this, so this is super intriguing. I like your introduction because it pulled me in, and made me think "what could this story possibly be about?" Once you went into detail, I was astounded! Definitely a good read, and I'm going to make sure I visit these hills in the near future!
ReplyDeleteFirst thing I thought, "Impossible", but when you said it was a tourist attraction I had to believe it. That was a plus on ethos. I liked this story because it's not another spooky ghost story and it seems slightly possible. Something else is you tried to give reasons why it may be happening rather than just leaving me without an idea of how it may have happened. That helped boost the believability of it also. This story makes me want to see that attraction. xD
ReplyDeleteThis story was great! I like how you describe it all and go into such good detail about everything going on around the place. It is also great how you have some explanations for why all this crazy stuff happens! It really made me intrigued to read on and to visit there one day!
ReplyDeleteGreat story I like the craziness of the uphill thought. Your story had great flow and the words all fit together. I like how you described the events in the story to make it seem real. the setting of the story helped out as well because readers can picture that in their heads. Nice story the details were great.
ReplyDeleteI liked the way you started your story. It was definitely not boring and interesting for me to keep reading. I want to visit this place because it is something I want to see for myself. I like how organized it was and the way you gave different ideas about why those events might've taken place. At first I was in disbelief but I think your story is trustworthy; great job!
ReplyDeleteYour story was really well written in that from the beginning peculiarity of Black Hills was explained and even questioned since you dispelled any disbelief caused by the possibility of simple magic tricks or smoke and mirrors. When you went further and attempted to explain how in some instances it disobeyed laws of physics yet in others still followed them, particularly the law of gravity, and then how many people in the physics field were perplexed by this irregularity made it seemed even more credible.
ReplyDeleteI want to visit!!!! This place sounds very entertaining. I liked the way you started the story by contrasting your audience, It helped grab the reader's attention and helped the reader let go of their personal opinions, which all though not a rhetorical device it does help gain the support of the reader. Well done.
ReplyDeleteYour argument is very clear and quite persuasive. I feel like I've heard of this place, but your paper just made me want to go there and see for myself. You used good language through out the piece which made your argument that much stronger. I like that you give alternative reasoning that present a point other than what you are trying to give, it adds to the credibility and also strengthens your work. Greatttt job!
ReplyDeletei like this story. It's very educational and cool at the same time. It makes me want to go to this place and see a ball rolling uphill with my own eyes.
ReplyDeleteYour story had some nice detail with the poles and such.
Sounds cool! I like how you mentioned the possibility of not caring about the science behind these phenomena and recommending it as good fun, it inspires open mindedness in the reader, and suggests that you are open minded as an author as well. I've actually been to this place when I was 5, I'll have to go back as I can't remember it.
ReplyDeleteScientific anomalies like the one in your story are both rare and fascinating, and I believe every word of it. No need to convince me by appealing to the Aristotlian modes of rhetoric. Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteGood story! It makes me want to go there and check it out for myself! I like the rhetoric in your first paragraph because it is easy to connect with and can be argued but most people would agree that the earth has gravity! Im not going to argue with that one! Anyways I like the description of the place and all of the events that happen inside of it, it seems very interesting. I would maybe suggest that you add a little more description of the location itself, but It doesn't make that much of a difference. The last paragraph was great! It helped make since of the paper and provided a stable answer for what could have been happening!
ReplyDeleteThis is very incredible! ive heard of something like this before, and it really is fascinating! Sort of reminds me of the last "Pirates" movie where the water drops move upwards. Phenomenons like this are so interesting to me so i thoroughly enjoyed this. Really great story, Fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteI love how you added a lot of science background because it made it seem like you were an expert on what you were presenting and it gave much credibility to your story. I believed it after the first paragraph. I honestly enjoyed reading this and I want to go check it out. Great Job.
ReplyDeleteThis story was incredibly fun and unreal i would really enjoy witnessing some of those things! I also loved that you gave us numerous possibilities to consider while trying to find an explanation for these happenings. Well done.
ReplyDeleteWOW I have never herd of this happening in our planet before, I in fact never herd of Cosmos House of Mystery before. I was really hooked in the first paragraph, because it was just all common sense and by adding the rhetorical question I was like "obviously" and when you kept on going, I was really liking it. Well written paper. good job!
ReplyDeleteYour story is creativity actual tale, and the ability to instill fear. This is the first time in my life I heard of something like this. Great descriptive language. You did and exceptional job.
ReplyDeleteWhen reading "Anti-Gravity" I instantly think magic trick! Or something we cant explain! The way you grabbed the reader with your title alone was amazing and made me read more! True I have seen a ball roll up hill but I have rolled it. So its crazy to think that this could actually happen. Good job!
